“I urge you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of YHVH our Elohim, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice – holy, acceptable to YHVH – which is your spiritual service. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of YHVH – what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12: 1-2, TLV)
The English word ‘repent’ literally means to re-think, or change one’s mind. When Shaul (Paul) instructs the Romans to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind,” he is telling them they need to think again; they need to repent. This instruction comes about three-fourths of the way through the letter, and it leads off with a “therefore.” Shaul is saying in essence, “in light of everything I have just laboriously explained to you, put on your thinking caps.” Be transformed. Don’t be bound by the way the world thinks. Think according to what YHVH has already told you and shown to you and proven to you in Torah. Remember, all the way back to creation, when YHVH pronounced everything that he had made “good and acceptable and perfect.” Think. Discern YHVH’s purposes. Walk accordingly.
