Praying for my children …

Praying For My Children

At the tender age of 60+ I have come to the realization that I have wasted a lot of time. There were days – years, even – that I did not pray. I did not know how and I was so busy wrangling with life that I didn’t even know how to approach the Master and Giver of Life. Even the past 28 years of being a committed Believer have not been perfect. But then, whose life is? No one is perfect, except the One who gave us life and for Whom we now live. I cannot flip my life into ‘Rewind’ and have a do-over. But, I can pray for my sons, my daughters-in-law and my grandchildren so that they won’t need a do-over. I can pray for the members of my congregation whom I’ve come to see as family: the brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren of the heart.

So many needs …. so little time!

Meat Sacrificed to Idols, How does Paul’s Exegesis Apply Today?

Meat Sacrificed to Idols

by Frank Houtz, BYNA Elder and at

Being a teacher in the Hebrew Roots movement and having a website promoting Bible study, I am often asked to give an opinion on a specific topic. Recently a question concerning meat sacrificed to idols and its relationship to eating Hallel food was sent to my inbox. I personally do not like to answer inquires concerning whether a person should or should not do something that is not clearly stated in Scriptures, since I am not lord over anyone and think it is better solved between a person and God. However, I do recognize that people are trying to make conclusions when often there is not enough information available to make a good decision. Therefore I attempt to give additional information that is pertinent and sometimes share my practice to give some explanation as to how various concerns could be handled. However, …

Considering the Way of the Lord …

Considering the Way of the Lord

by Cathy Helms,

All four gospels quote Isaiah’s message to “prepare the way of the LORD.” The term is ambiguous to most modern readers. It’s first usage concerns Father Abraham, who was willing to leave everything behind and head toward a place of blessing, not knowing where he would end up. The Hebrew word translated as “way” is derek. While it can mean a literal road or a path, our subject today is assuredly a manner of walking, or, in other words, a lifestyle.

Chasing the theme through the Bible, one encounters an intriguing number of “ways,” including the way of life, the way of wisdom, the way of the righteous, the way of faithfulness, the way of insight, the way of the saints, the way of peace, and the way of King David–the monarch against whom all the other kings of Judah and Israel are compared. In contrast, we also encounter the way of death, the way of the wicked, the way of sinners, the way of evil, the way of a fool, the way of the treacherous, the way of a sluggard, the way of the guilty, the way of Jeroboam, and the way of the kings of Israel, of whom not one good thing is said.

But, in the end, it emerges that in reality there are only two “ways” : life or death, blessing or curse, good and evil.

Prayer Psalms, Psalm 15

Prayer Psalms, Psalm 15

by Ephrimona of

Baruch Ata,
YHVH – Elohey Yisrael, Avi
(Bless You, YHVH – Elohim of Israel, my Father).

I will praise You, YHVH, Elohi (my God). With all my heart and soul, I will praise You. For You are very great and You are clothed with honor and majesty.

You, Boreh Olam (Creator of the Universe), cover Yourself with light as with a garment. You stretch out the heavens like a curtain; You lay the beams of Your upper chambers in the waters. You make the clouds Your chariot; You walk on the wings of the wind. You make Your angels spirits and Your ministers a flame of fire. You, Elohey Emet (God of Truth), laid the foundations of the earth, so that it would not be moved, forever. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; its waters stood above the mountains, and at Your rebuke they fled; at the voice of Your thunder they hastened away. They went up over the mountains; they went down into the valleys, to the place, which You founded for them. You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, so that they may not return to cover the earth.

In this great and wide sea, there are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about, and the Leviathan, which You have made, plays there. These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You, El Ro’eh (God Who Sees and Provides), give them, they gather in; You open Your hand; they are filled with good. But if You hide Your face, they are troubled, and if You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. But then when You send forth Your Spirit, they are created, and You renew the face of the earth.

You water the hills from Your upper chambers. You send the springs into the valleys; they flow among the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field; even the wild donkeys quench their thirst. You cause the grass to grow, for the cattle and the vegetation, for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine that makes glad the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread which strengthens man’s heart.

YHVH, El Ne’eman (Faithful God), Your trees are full of sap, the cedars of L’vanon, which You planted and the fir trees where the birds make their nests, and the stork has her home. Because of You, the birds of the heavens have their home and sing among the branches. You also have made the high hills for the wild goats, and the cliffs are a refuge for the rock badgers.

You have appointed the moon for seasons, and the sun knows its going down. You make darkness, and it is night, in which all the beasts of the forest creep about. The young lions roar after their prey and seek their food from You, Ribon Olam (Sovereign of the Universe). When the sun rises, they gather together and lie down in their dens. But man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening.

You look on the earth, and it trembles; You touch the hills, and they smoke. The earth is full of Your possessions. O YHVH, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom, You have made them all. May Your glory endure forever and may You always rejoice in Your works. The earth is satisfied with the fruit of Your works. But may sinners be consumed from the earth, and the wicked be no more.

I will sing to You, Bor’ee (my Creator), as long as I live. While I have my being, I will sing praise to You, Elohi (my God). My meditation of You will be sweet; I will be glad in You, Elohey Yeshua’tee (God of my Salvation). I exalt You, YHVH; my soul praises You!

Hallelu-Yah!!! For You, YHVH, are Elohim. You are Elohey Yisrael, Elohey Avraham, Yitzchak and Ya’acov. Avi the Almighty reigns!

2 challah

Garlic Herb Challah for Bread Machine

by Yocheved

1 1⁄4 cups water
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
3 1⁄4 cups bread flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1⁄2 teaspoons sea salt
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon crushed dried rosemary leaves
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 1⁄2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

1 egg, beaten with
1 tablespoon water
1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Load all ingredients in the order listed into bread machine. Water through yeast.
-> To make challah, select dough only setting.
-> To make sandwich bread, select large loaf.

When dough-only cycle is done, remove dough from machine and place on well floured surface. Dust top of dough with flour and press out air bubbles.

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Roll dough into rectangle, then roll up into rope (as if you were making cinnamon rolls.) Cut rope into 3 or 6 pieces. Roll each of these pieces into balls, cover with towel and set in a warm place free from drafts. Let rest 15 minutes.
Next, roll each ball into a rope about 8 or 9 inches long. Braid, set in baking pan lined with parchment paper or corn meal. Cover with towel and let rest 45 minutes. (I put mine on top of the stove so it can enjoy the warmth from the oven.).
Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Place in oven and bake for 35 minutes or when nicely browned and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Bon Appetit! / b’te’avon!

About 8 servings.

Prayer for the State of Israel

Translated from the Rabbinical Council of America Edition of the Artscroll Siddur

Our Father who is in the heavens, Rock of Israel and its Redeemer, bless the state of Israel, the first sprouting of our redemption. Protect her with the pinion of Your kindness and spread over her the sukkah of Your peace and send Your Light and Your Truth to her leaders, her officials and her counsellors and make them straight with good advice from Your presence and strengthen the hands of the guardians, the defenders of our holy land. Bequeath and confer upon them O Elohim of our salvation, help and a crown of victory. You will crown them and You will give peace in the land and eternal happiness to the ones who dwell in her and for all our brothers of the house of Israel, count and please attend to them in all the lands of their dispersion. Cause them to go quickly and upright to Zion Your city, and to Yerushalayim the dwelling place of Your Name. As it is written in the Torah of Moshe Your Servant, If [you are] driven away, wandering at the end of the Heavens, from there YHVH your Elohim will gather you and from there He will take you. YHVH your Elohim will bring you to the land which your fathers inherited and He will cause you to inherit it and He will do good to you and He will may you many more than your fathers and unite our hear for love. [He will] have us fear and regard His Name with awe and guard all the Words of Your Torah. Send to us quickly the Son of David, the Anointed One of Your Justice to redeem the ones who wait for Your Salvation. Shine forth in splendor the pride of Your Strength upon all the ones who dwell in Earth, Your Land, and will say each one who has breath, YHVH the Elohim of Israel is King and His Kingship is in every dominion. Amein and Selah!
