The prophet Samuel gave the word of YHVH to King Saul:
“Does Adonai delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of Adonai? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, to pay heed than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry.
Since you have rejected Adonai’s word, He has also rejected you as king.”
(1 Samuel 15:22-23)
Why is it so important to obey YHVH’s commandments?
Because His Kingdom operates according to them.
Imagine this. A vehicle is moving along the highway. Suddenly, one of the parts of the vehicle – it does not actually matter which one – decides it wants to stop working, to stop doing its job, to stop performing its purpose, to stop being obedient to the instructions that cause it to operate properly. What happens? At the very least, the ride becomes more erratic and less reliable, or the vehicle may even stop moving forward altogether.
Samuel’s message to Saul also points out that disobedience EQUALS rebellion and stubbornness, which are “like the sin of divination,” “iniquity,” and “idolatry.”
Not obeying should not be taken lightly.
What is your assignment?
What does obedience to YHVH’s commands look like?
Here is Keith Green’s musical interpretation – “To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice”:
My Father and My King, thank you for giving me instructions and assignments as one of Your children. I will hear and obey.
