True return is impossible without humility. Pride blinds us to our faults, justifies our failures, and resists correction. Humility opens the eyes, softens the heart, and makes teshuvah possible. The Torah describes Moses, the greatest of the prophets, as “very humble, more than all people who were on the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3). The Lord declares through Isaiah that He dwells “in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite” (Isaiah 57:15).
Proverbs repeatedly warns that “pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). The historical books and the prophets identify pride as a root cause of both the northern and southern kingdoms’ downfalls. Only when the people are brought low do they begin to return.
Yeshua models perfect humility. “Though He was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant… He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:6–8). He teaches the disciples, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). The apostle Peter echoes the same call: “Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble’” (1 Peter 5:5).
In the restoration of Israel, humility will be a defining mark of the redeemed people. The remnant that returns will no longer walk in the arrogance that led to exile. Zephaniah speaks of a people “humble and lowly” who seek refuge in the name of the Lord (Zephaniah 3:12). The same spirit must mark every individual who seeks to return during these forty days.
Practice for Day 11:
In your evening cheshbon ha-nefesh, ask specifically: “Where did pride manifest itself today—in my speech, my attitude, my resistance to correction, or my comparison with others?” Confess it without excuse. Ask the Holy One for a humble and contrite heart. Extend the prayer to the House of Israel: that the entire nation would walk in humility before its God and thereby become a fitting vessel for restoration.
