I am not so sure specifically how to define “godless chatter,” but I am pretty sure we should be able to recognize it when we hear it, even when it is coming out of our own mouths. We certainly need to be aware of its dangers and be sure to guard against it every day.
“But avoid godless chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness and their words will spread like cancer.” (2 Timothy 2:16-17, CJB)
We will talk with each other about recipes, that restaurant we visited, the book we are reading, what’s wrong with our car, etc. Not everything we talk about has God as its central theme. But there is a type of information exchange that is like the sound of animals babbling. It is corrosive to our spirits. This we must avoid and stop as soon as it arises.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; renew in me a resolute spirit.” (Psalm 51:10, CJB)
