The goat designated for Azazel is a powerful enacted parable of the removal of sin. After the high priest lays both hands on its head and confesses over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, the goat is led into the wilderness, bearing those iniquities to a remote place (Leviticus 16:21–22). Isaiah 53 describes the Servant of the Lord in strikingly similar language: “He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all… He bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.”
The Apostolic Writings apply this imagery directly to Yeshua: “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness” (1 Peter 2:24). “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The scapegoat finds its fulfillment in the Messiah who carries away the sin of the House of Israel and of the world.
On Yom Kippur we remember both the ancient ritual and its greater fulfillment. The sins confessed are not merely covered for a year; they are borne away by the Sin-Bearer. The wilderness into which the goat was led becomes, in the Messianic reading, the place of final removal. Confidence in that finished work frees the heart to confess fully and to intercede boldly for the nation still waiting for its national day of cleansing.
The image of the scapegoat bearing sins into the wilderness is one of the most vivid pictures of removal in all of Scripture. In the Messiah that removal is not annual but final. The sins confessed are not stored for later review; they are carried away. This assurance frees the heart to confess fully and to intercede boldly, knowing that the Sin-Bearer is sufficient for both personal and national guilt.
Practice for Day 36:
Meditate on Leviticus 16:20–22 and Isaiah 53. Thank the Servant of the Lord for bearing your iniquities and the iniquities of His people Israel. Release any remaining guilt into His finished work of removal. Pray that the entire nation would soon look upon the Sin-Bearer and find complete cleansing.
