Although we are well into Elul, the memory of the fast of the fifth month (Tisha B’Av) still lingers in the background of the season. Zechariah records the Lord’s promise that the fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh, and tenth months “shall be to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts” (Zechariah 8:19). The destruction of the Temple and the long exile are not the final word.
The same prophet hears the Lord declare, “I have returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain” (Zechariah 8:3). Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord returning to a restored Temple (Ezekiel 43:1–5). The Apostolic Writings look toward the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2). The mourning of exile will be turned into the joy of permanent dwelling with God.
Practice for Day 14:
Read Zechariah 8 in its entirety. Thank the God of Israel that mourning will be turned to joy and that the fasts will become feasts. Intercede for the rebuilding of Jerusalem, the restoration of the Temple service in whatever form the Messiah appoints, and the full return of both houses of Israel to the land and to the Lord.
